How Much Does It Cost?

• UNA Education Abroad Scholarship: Students can apply for a UNA Study Abroad Scholarship which provides funds that can be applied toward airfare or any other expenses related to study abroad. Applications typically open mid-fall and close at the end of January. Email ipo@una.edu for more information. Education Abroad Scholarship Application (una.edu)

• Boren Scholarship: The Boren Scholarship provides up to $20,000 of funding for a student to study abroad and take classes in a foreign language that is important to national security. Upon graduation, Boren scholars must work in the federal government in a department critical to national security broadly defined. www.borenawards.org

• Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship: Offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study and intern destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Over 2,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study or intern abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000 for fall and spring programs, and $3,000 for summer programs. www.gilmanscholarship.org

• Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia): is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. A Freeman-ASIA Award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc. www.iie.org/freeman-asia

• Fund for Education Abroad (FEA): was established to address the need for an independent study abroad scholarship provider. FEA is expanding access to study abroad by raising awareness of its benefits to the individual and value to the collective, and by granting scholarships of up to $10,000. Applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad and those destined for non-traditional locations are given preference, in an effort to make the demographics of U.S. undergraduates studying abroad reflect the rich diversity of the U.S. population. FEA Scholarship

• Critical Languages Scholarship: With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning. The CLS Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State. 10 weeks of intensive language study during the summer in a country in which the language is spoken. Can be used the summer following senior year. Graduate students are also eligible. www.clscholarship.org

Below are two examples. Please check with your department or college for more information about their potential scholarships.

• Ross Scholarship: Students eligible for a Ross Scholarship include those majoring or minoring in Foreign Languages, French, German or Spanish who will participate in a study abroad trip in the Department of Foreign Languages during the current academic year. One or more awards will be available per year, depending on the merit of applications received.

• Honors College: The Honors College offers scholarships and financial assistance to students participating in study abroad, study away, travel for the purpose of research and presentation, and other forms of experiential learning. Scholarships and financial support are awarded based on available funds and on an application process. Please contact the Dean for more details.

• Endowed Scholarships: These can vary depending on your studies. These can aid in education abroad funding.

UNA partners with ISEP for semester opportunities. Students can use UNA financial aid, scholarships, and more to pay for a semester to their regular student account. Athletic, Band, and UNA Housing scholarships cannot be applied. Consult the Office of Financial Aid for more information. Students can also participate in ISEP Scholarships

  This requires using ISEP or a partner program to study in an approved university and receive potential funds to study abroad. 

Students can participate in fundraising with your group or individually from your local family, friends and community.

UNA's Quality Enhancement Program offers students achance to apply for a grant up to $1,500 towards an internship, research project, or study abroad opportunity. There are two cycles, one for Fall and one for Spring. Awards are first come first serve. Click here for more information and the application link.
